Beechfield House
This magnificent period house offers an enchanting panoramic vista of a wooded valley and unspoiled countryside. The four-bedroom residence was originally constructed during the dawn of the 20th century and therefore boasts a plethora of timelessly elegant period details; it is particularly worth noting that every room in the double-fronted property carries ornate feature fireplaces.
Location
The much sought-after village of Symonds Yat West is situated in the heart of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is famous for its picturesque river scenery, rugged hillsides and limestone cliffs. There are several popular riverside pubs and restaurants along with many beautiful walking and cycle routes. For those who enjoy outdoor pursuits, various companies offer a range of activities such as canoe and SUP hire, abseiling and rock climbing.
The nearby village of Whitchurch has an 'Outstanding' Ofsted-graded Church of England Primary School. The popular village shop, Woods of Whitchurch, stocks local produce, fresh fruit and vegetables and various essentials, and has a coffee shop and takeaway. There is also a village hall, a garage and MOT centre, an hotel, a restaurant and a bus stop.
Symonds Yat is situated just two miles from the Welsh border and is centred between the popular market towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, both of which offer highly regarded secondary schools, supermarkets, restaurants, pubs, leisure facilities and independently owned shops.
The home at a glance
Beechfield House was one of several striking homes within the Symonds Yat setting to be designed by the renowned architect, Edwin George Agnew Cracklow. Each one of his properties is one-of-a-kind and beautifully complements their glorious surroundings.
The far-reaching view of the Wye Valley sets a sublime scene and the main entrance into the double-fronted property leads into a spacious reception hall, which is complete with an oak floor, which flows into each of the three reception rooms and upstairs to the galleried landing.
On either side of the main entrance, there are two reception rooms, both of which carry beamed ceilings, picture rails, and feature fireplaces, which each bear a vibrant tiled surround. Of these rooms, one is dual aspect - and therefore streamed with plenty of natural light - whereas the other also includes a wood-burning stove - a staple of country life.
At the far end of the reception hall, there is a formal dining room which is dual aspect, includes an exposed beam and a cast iron feature fireplace.
The beautifully bright dining kitchen serves as the heart of the home. This area includes an inset wood-burning stove, which creates a warm and inviting environment during the colder months of the year. The space bears solid wood shaker-style units with solid oak countertops and a limestone Mandarin Stone floor, which has underfloor heating. A central island includes a breakfast bar, offering an informal dining space, and a double Belfast sink includes Perrin & Rowe traditional-style taps. In terms of practicalities, there are several integrated appliances, such as a dishwasher, a wine cooler and a wine rack. There is also housing for an American-style fridge/freezer, a microwave and a large range-style cooker*.
The utility zone, much like the kitchen, includes shaker units with oak countertops, space and plumbing for both a washing machine and a tumble dyer, an additional Belfast sink with Perrin & Rowe taps, and the Worcester Bosch combi-boiler. The utility room also includes a door, presenting an alternative entrance into the home.
The ground floor also includes a shower room which contains a walk-in rainfall shower, a WC and a basin.
The staircase in the reception hall leads to a galleried landing, and from here, a set of glazed doors lead out to a balcony, which presents an excellent vantage point to sit with a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise over Coppett Hill.
This level of the property accommodates four double bedrooms, all of which boast cast iron feature fireplaces, picture rails and beamed ceilings. Of these, the master bedroom is a triple aspect space and therefore plenty of natural light cascades into the expansive room.
The chic family bathroom includes an antique clawfoot cast iron bath with Burlington taps and a rainfall shower overhead. There is also a substantial Italian sink and a WC.
Beechfield House also includes a cellar, which presents an excellent storage space for cases of wine, bikes or canoes.
The great outdoors
The grounds, just shy of an acre, are fully enclosed and present a wonderfully private slice of the countryside, offering its custodian an enviable rural haven.
The far corner of the grounds includes a small orchard which includes fig, pear, plum, apple and cherry trees.
While the garden is predominantly sloped, owing to the hillside setting, several areas have been terraced, offering spaces to sit and soak in the striking scenery. An oak-framed gazebo shelters a generously sized seating area, giving an ideal space for an outdoor sitting room and this is bordered by raised beds, created by railway sleepers.
There is a workshop within the garden and a garage, both of which are equipped with light and power. There is also a driveway, giving enough room for up to five vehicles.
