Location
The idyllic town of Usk is around half a mile from Blossom Lodge. Usk is located in the heart of Monmouthshire countryside and sits on one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the country, the River Usk. Its main claim to fame is as the 'Town of Flowers', as Usk was the winner of Wales in Bloom 37 years in a row.
In terms of amenities, Usk offers a traditional shopping street with boutique shops and two convenience stores, a collection of cosy tearooms, bars and hotels, a primary school and nursery, a garden centre, a dentist, doctors surgery and vets, various sports clubs, and country and riverside walks in abundance. The romantic Usk Castle is close to the town centre, and the beautiful Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel and Spa is located on the outskirts of Usk.
Monmouth, the beautiful and historic Welsh county town, is 14 miles away. Its high street gives an assortment of boutiques and restaurants, welcoming pubs, bustling bars, leisure facilities, private and public schools, and various supermarkets - including Waitrose and M&S.
The home at a glance
Blossom Lodge was, in 2022, identified by Wales Online as one of the country's "prettiest coast and country cottages". The detached, stone-built home dates back to 1850 and presents a beautiful marriage of the Gothic revival and arts & crafts architecture styles. The property is filled with period features and an abundance of beautiful arched windows, allowing light to flood in.
The main entrance is sheltered beneath a stone canopied porch and leads into an elegant reception room, which serves as a formal dining room. This dual-aspect space offers a handsome first impression of the home as it includes a curved wall and Mullioned sash windows with original shutters, as well as a feature fireplace and a timbered ceiling.
Beyond, there is a capacious sitting room. This triple-aspect space is streamed with plenty of natural light as it catches the sun throughout the day. It also boasts a feature fireplace housing a woodburning stove, a timbered ceiling, and a set of French doors which include arched windows which lead out to a patio seating area in the delightful rear garden.
The dining kitchen is also beautifully bright. It is fitted with Howdens units and includes an integrated dishwasher, a fan oven and ceramic hob, and space for a fridge/freezer. This leads into a utility room, which has space and plumbing for a washing machine and tumble dryer, as well as the boiler, providing a warm space to hang laundry. Here, a door leads through into the garden.
A staircase in the largest reception room leads to a galleried landing which gives access to the three double bedrooms, all of which carry vaulted ceilings. Of these, the master bedroom includes two built-in wardrobes and far-reaching views over the River Usk, one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the country. The second bedroom also has a fitted wardrobe, plus two dormer windows, one of which showcases the Olway Brook, a tributary of the Usk.
In terms of washing facilities, there is a family bathroom on the first floor - complete with a three-piece white suite. There is also a ground-floor shower room found off the dining room, giving an excellent spot to freshen up after enjoying the great outdoors.
Surrounding the Lodge are delightful, well-maintained, pretty classic cottage gardens which wrap around the property. A gravel path meanders around a level lawn bordered by well-stocked flower beds. There is also a small pond, which presents an especially lovely feature.
In a far corner of the garden, there is a fully insulated Shepherd's hut which has light and power. This can serve as an ideal home office, a hobby room or accommodation for guests. The shepherd's hut is available via separate negotiation.
